Since 2004 Green Empowerment and Border Green Energy Team (BGET) have installed 36 medical clinics and 2 hospitals along the border in Thailand and Burma. Building on the success and experience of the previous solar systems we plan to bring solar electricity to a student dormitory.
The dormitory is located in Bueng Klueng village, southwest of Umphang along the border, and is home to around 30 Karen children of all ages whose families are unable to support their education at home. These children stay at the dorm where they are housed, fed and supported in many other ways. All of the children attend the local Thai school. The dorm has been in operation since 1998. The solar system will power a computer, satellite internet, and lights.
BGET has been helping and training refugees and internally displaced people from the Burma border area from the start, using various forms of renewable energy like solar, micro hydro-electric, and biogas.
Solar panels will provide electricity to a dormitory which houses, feeds and supports 30 Karen children of all ages. The solar system will power lights, a computer, and satellite internet access.
Currently, there is no power grid or electrical infrastructure to serve the dorm. Staff and 30 children will benefit from lights and computer access to do their schoolwork. Today they have to rely on flashlight or kerosene lights for reading, and cannot operate any computer or any other appliance. Staff will participate in the installation and be trained in operation of the system.
Technical design is complete. Local partner BGET will procure the equipment, help install it, and train staff in the installation, operation and maintenance of the system. Everybody will help for the installation, providing construction labor.
